Pope Francis  - Laudato Si - 2015

“It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer and die needlessly. ”

Pope Francis is emerging as one of the most courageous and visionary leaders on the planet.  He is spearheading a call for a new form of planetary governance that prioritizes the stewardship of the earth and all its species. In June 2015 Pope Francis published the Ecclesiastical, Laudato Si, a deeply researched document that has shaken traditional boundaries by bringing together theology and science in addressing the severe threats of global warming. The document offers an extraordinarily integrative meta-perspective on many of the global challenges facing humanity today while outlining healing pathways forward. Pope Francis is deeply critical of ruthless capitalism that causes immense suffering of the poor and of animals and that is responsible for environmental devastation. He is using his role to initiate political awareness and action across the world. He has called for a global day of prayer for the environment to be held on September 1 2015.

Pope Francis "contributes to the crumbling of the old ways as he refuses lifeless, theological ideologies disconnected from the immediacy of heart wisdom." (S. Ostroff, A Testament of Now)

AVAAZ empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. The model of internet organising allows  individual efforts, however small, to be rapidly combined into a powerful collective force.

The AVAAZ community of over 40 million people worldwide campaigns in 15 languages and is served by a core team on 6 continents with thousands of volunteers. The team and volunteers' action includes signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing "offline" protests and events -- to ensure that the views and values of the world's people inform the decisions that affect us all.

AVAAZ has already been a powerful instrument of change, enhancing the life of people and animals and protecting environment. The world has Ricken Patel to thank for this.
